Painting an apple tree from my yard onto an antique settee for my MFA
In this video I take you inside the making of a one-of-a-kind fine art settee- an antique piece whose upholstery I've transformed into a painting substrate for my Masters in Visual Art final exhibition.
You'll see me sketch an apple tree from my front yard (chosen because the settee frame is partly made from apple wood), work through the composition, and transfer the design using a digital projector. I then walk you through how I use watered-down chalk paint to paint the tree and roots directly onto the upholstery- including why this medium works so well for fabric, and what makes it different from other paint choices.
I also share how I'm tackling the theoretical side of my MFA: working through my research journals, identifying themes across all the work I've made so far, and beginning to map out the structure for my exegesis. It's a good window into the dance between making and meaning-making in a practice-led research degree.
The video ends with one of the most satisfying moments in any painting process --- removing the painter's tape to reveal the (almost finished) fine art settee.
If you'd like to learn how I make my own leather journal covers for the sketchbooks and research journals you see in my videos, check out my new Γ la carte art skills class in the link below.
Thanks so much to everyone who supports me and these videos by buying art, a print, or an e-course her on my website. This is how I make my living and it genuinely means the world. π
